WoW Women's Design group

Barrow Cadbury is funding Women of Wolverhampton (WoW) over a two year period to work with the Women's Design Service to set up a Women's Design Group in Wolverhampton. Women's Design Groups perform for Gender what access Groups delivered for Disability. WDGs include both Women who are professionally invovled in planning and the built environment, and Women from the community who have an interest in becoming more knowledgeable and engaged with issues affecting their neighbourhood's. The Women's Design Service have funding to establish WDGs in a number of London Boroughs and are already involved in establishing two pilot groups; one in Islington and one in Manchester. Both groups have held a number of events and have liaised on a variety of issues with planners and regeneration bodies.

During the first year of the project the WoW Co-ordinator, Chris Irvine will be consulting Women about how they would wish the Wolverhampton Women's Design Group to operate and building up a database of Women interested in being involved. Chris will be working to form a close relationship with Planning Departments and with exixting partnerships, projects and organisations. Women of Wolverhampton (WoW) will work in co-operation with the Women's Design Service and with local people and groups. It will be aiming to work with any current and proposed initiatives that are working to support increased community engagement in planning.

The mojority of people making the decisions about the planning and design of our built environment are men whether they are planners, architects, engineers, councillors or heads of regeneration boards. Women's Design Service have been working to increase the number of women getting involved in these issues, and there are certainly more women now then there used to be. However, Women's requirments in terms of safety, accessibility, provision of facilities, location of amenties and design of housing, transport, public buildings and open spaces are still not being adequatley addressed.

Women's Design Service was established in 1987 to ensure that the design and use of the built environment reflects the needs and aspirations of Women. WoW shares these aims and working with the WDS to establish a Wolverhampton WDG is our way of involving more and more Women in influencing desicions about their local areas eased community engagement in planning.
